BJJ Competition Results
for Don Geddis

I occasionally compete in Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournaments. Below are some of my more successful competitions. (Tournaments where I didn't do so well, somehow didn't make it to this page.)

Tournaments are generally single elimination. Competitors are divided by weight, age, and belt rank (skill). I've competed in Superfeather (122-134 lbs) and Feather (135-147) weights; in Adult (18-29 years old) and Master's (30-39); and in blue belt and purple belt ranks (the rank order is: white, blue, purple, brown, black).

Depending on the divison, a match lasts between five and ten minutes of continuous action. If a submission occurs (indicated by an opponent tapping the mat with his hand), the match is over immediately. Otherwise, if time runs out, the competitor ahead on points wins. "Advantages" are awarded for efforts that almost result in points, but barely fail instead. If time runs out, and points are even, then the leader in advantages wins. (If advantages are also even, then it is a referee decision, based on aggressiveness and other similar qualities.)

Winner (x2) Black40+ Feather 148lbs
Will Harvey Grappling with friends Palo Alto, CA
A friend of mine (Will Harvey) without grappling training, wanted to try a little submission wrestling. He's about 175 lbs, in good shape, but limited technique. (I'm in the blue shirt; Will is in the white.) First match: I sit to guard, get full guard, attempted omoplata, side rear naked choke (like Royce vs. Shamrock in UFC 1!). Second match: double underhooks, outside leg trip (like Royce vs. Gordeau in UFC 1!), mount, opponent gives up.

Gold/1st PurpleAdult Feather 148lbs
Ralph and Charles Gracie United Gracie San Francisco, CA
Vs. Doug Fong from Charles Gracie academy. Same opponent as two years earlier, and almost an identical fight! I'm in the gi with the blue circle Ralph Gracie logos; Doug starts with (and later loses) the green/yellow belt. Most of the match was me, on top, trying (and failing) to pass Doug's guard. No points or advantages for either fighter. There are also a couple of discussions with the ref (in the middle of the match!) about heelhooks and kneebars, neither of which were permitted at the purple belt level in this tournament. After I finally pass (3 pt), I quickly take his back (4 pt). My choke attempts fail (but yield an advantage). I finally switch from back mount to a successful armbar. Geddis wins by submission, after being up 7-0 on points (1-0 advantages).
